The area surrounding Pinglestone Tithe Barn, known as Fobdown, holds a rich history dating back to Neolithic and Stone Age settlements, with Roman artifacts and a villa discovered. Cynegils, the King of Wessex, probably granted the land to the Bishop of Winchester in the 7th century. In the 9th century the land became part of The Liberty of Alresford, encompassing Old Alresford, New Alresford, and Medstead. The tithe barn was built for the Bishop of Winchester in the 15th century for the purpose of storing crops taken as a tithe (a tax of 10%) by the church from farmers.
